'Odds' favor Zephyrs
Ever since head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend sat on a rain-soaked chair after the Zephyrs loss to Northampton earlier this season, her team has been anything but wet as they head into the final week of the regular season.
Berg-Townsend's dip into that wet seat came after being challenged to a game of "Odds." As explained by senior Abigail Nguyen, the game begins with the phrase, "What are the odds," followed by something silly, strange or even outlandish to complete the interrogative sentence. This one happened to end in, "you'll sit in that wet chair?" After that, both players choose a number. Next, a countdown ensues, and once it ends, both players say their numbers. If it's revealed that both players have the same number, the recipient of the odds challenge has to complete the task.
"It's something we've done throughout the whole year," said Nguyen. "It just puts smiles on our faces when we have to do things like [sitting on a wet chair] that."
For Berg-Townsend's part, the cold seat was a way to loosen up a team that had stumbled out of the gate, going 0-5 to start the season, with the Northampton loss seen as a positive outing despite the 3-2 final. Since that soaking, the team won nine of its next eleven games, and are currently riding a three-game winning streak.
"As a coach, I really try and work with the team mentally," said Berg-Townsend. "If they know I am loose, they are loose too."
That three-game streak includes a double-header sweep over Allentown Central Catholic, giving Berg-Townsend her 100th career win when the Zephs won the nightcap 15-0.
Berg-Townsend insisted that the attention should be focused more of the achievements of the team and not her individual accomplishments.
"It's not my milestone, but [it's for ]the coaches who have coached with me and been part of this program, and it's a milestone for all of the hard work of the present and past girls of Whitehall's program since 2008," she said.
Even when they were winless this season, Nguyen said their outlook never changed. It always remained upbeat.
"We came into all the games with a positive attitude," she said.
Nguyen played a pivotal role in helping the Zephs turn the corner. The senior was clutch in their comeback win over undefeated Emmaus two weeks ago, coming through in the bottom of the seventh with the game-winning RBI.
Nguyen said she doesn't get nervous in those situations, relying on her experience to master the moment.
"I don't mind them," said Nguyen. "I just do what I've been doing for the last four years."
It also helps that her teammates have confidence in her, something she also brings to those situations.
Plenty of other players have played major roles in putting them on the brink of a district playoff berth. They need one more win in their remaining four games to nail down a spot.
Kay Solderitch has continued to swing a hot bat. In the second game against the Vikes, she was 3-4 with two triples and three RBIs. Julia Solderitch was equally impressive in their 9-2 win over Palmerton last Friday, going 3-4 with a double, triple and 4 RBIs. Rachel Spanitz had a good day at the plate against the Bombers, finishing 2-3 with a double, triple and 2 RBIs.
Ashlee Brosky earned the victory against Palmerton, allowing just one hit while striking out six en route to the victory.
After Friday's win, the Zephs currently sit in fourth place in the Skyline Division of the EPC with a 7-5 record (9-5 overall). Nguyen believes their all-around play has been the catalyst allowing them to make that steady climb above .500.
"We've been coming together offensively and defensively," said Nguyen. "We've been coming together to win those games. That's what it takes."
Berg-Townsend said that mental toughness has also played a big part.
"The girls, the team have been trusting themselves, one another and having fun," she said. "We got back to some basics and softball 101. We took some time and really focused on the mental aspect of the game/"
They've scored 93 runs in those nine wins, and now it's time to see if they can make that push to the playoffs. That goal is a motivating factor.
"We want to win districts, but before you can do that, you have to get there first," said Nguyen. "It's baby steps."
Berg-Townsend knows the road won't be easy.
"The team is really excited on making their push towards districts," Berg-Townsend said. "We are facing our division this week. [It's ]tough competition but there is confidence."
