Mini mart is also winner in lottery

Whitehall Mini Mart is no stranger to its customers purchasing winning lottery tickets.

However, the recent purchase of a $2 million winning Powerball ticket was certainly over the top for the Lehigh Street store.

The man who purchased the winning ticket is in his 80s. According to Sam Patel, the store's owner, the man stopped in the store following the April 11 Powerball drawing, proclaiming, "I got the winning ticket!"

Patel said the man told him he had bought the Powerball ticket, with the winning numbers, for his 36-year-old son.

"He came in, shook our hands," Patel said.

The man told Patel he matched the five numbers drawn, but not the Powerball number, which was 12. The winning numbers were 01, 12, 32, 42 and 58.

"We have had big ticket winners, but not seven digits," Patel said.

The winner, who lives a close distance to the store, asked that his name not be released. But according to his friends, he frequents the convenience store most mornings. He is known to chat and enjoy coffee there.

"We call ourselves the Coffee Klatch," said one friend who stopped by the market.

"He is here most of the time and regularly buys lottery tickets," Patel added.

The $2 million winning ticket resulted in an increase of people stopping by to purchase lottery tickets.

Hanging from the store's ceilings are winning tickets and the amounts won. Also, the windows are filled with such stubs, from a $100,000 winning lottery ticket to two $50,000 winners, five $1,000 winners and hundreds for lesser amounts.

The township resident will receive $2 million, minus the 25-percent federal withholding tax.

Patel will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
