Residents speak against proposed park
Karen and Mike Evans, whose residence is near the proposed Clear Channel Park, made it clear Monday evening at the Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners meeting that they oppose the project that could create grounds for soccer and field hockey in the area of South Church and Columbia streets.
"My question is, can this grant be utilized for other parks?" Karen Evans asked. "Not all three fields have to be in one park."
On the evening's agenda was a resolution granting Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. authority to submit a $30,000 grant application to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources that mostly will involve engineering work.
"It's a guideline, not set in stone," Hozza said.
He added it was part of the township's comprehensive plan and would be used as a recreational resource.
"We don't think it's good for the neighborhood," Karen Evans said.
According to her, several of her neighbors, some of whom were in attendance, are also opposed to the field.
Karen Evans said the brakes should be put on the proposed project until the township hears from the adjoining landowner, Lehigh Valley Hospital, "to get funding from them."
She recommended the land should be used for fitness and walking areas.
Voting to proceed with the state grant application for other projects were Commissioners Phillips Armstrong, Thomas Slonaker, Philip Ginder, Clair Hunsberger and Gerard Palagonia. Board President Linda Snyder and Dennis Hower voted in opposition.
The board and Hozza agreed to not proceed further with the Clear Channel site.
Hower said he was told when the township acquired the property from Clear Channel in 2004 that the plan was to turn it into a playground.
Robert Wagner also opposed the project on the 18-acre site, commenting on the potential for speeding vehicles in the area.
