Girls get first win
When the Whitehall softball team finally broke into the win column, they did it in a big way.
Really big. In fact, call it breaking bat.
They erupted for 14 runs against host Catasauqua on Saturday, giving them their first win of the year. Before the game against the Rough Riders, they had scored 13 runs over five games.
They jumped on Catty early, scoring 10 runs in the top of the second inning. That inning saw them take advantage of their opportunities at the plate, allowing starting pitcher Kay Solderitch to settle into a groove
They also added to that lead throughout the game. In the top of the fifth, they tacked on a run, and then added two more in the sixth and one in the seventh. In the fifth, Cara Bonshak battled Roughie pitcher Lexi Ayache, fouling off several pitches until she singled to right, scoring Kay Solderitch who had earlier reached on a single. Bonshak followed that up with a double to right-center in the sixth, knocking in two more runs.
Kay Solderitch got the win, her first of the year. She also had two RBIs, once again helping herself at the plate.
The Zephs have knocked on the door a few times this season, with three of their losses coming by two runs or less. However, Saturday's game was their coming out party offensively.
"It's great to finally get our first win under our belt," said head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend. "[We're] excited to begin our win streak.
"The girls continue to work hard and I am confident that consistency will begin to follow us."
Their torrid hitting continued on Monday as they traveled to East Stroudsburg North High School to take on the Timberwolves. In that game, they once again hit double digits, this time winning 11-1 over an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference foe, their first league win of the year.
Berg-Townsend said that it was good to see their offense clicking. She said that winning back-to-back games has instilled some confidence, and it was a definite morale booster.
"I think the girls got the feel of winning again," she said. "Instead of feeling down [after a game], they're feeling up. It's a good feeling.
In that win, both Kay Solderitch and Ashlee Brosky took the ball for the Zephs, as was the case against the Roughies. Kay Solderitch only allowed one hit while striking out four in her four innings of work for the win. Brosky finished the game, allowing three hits while striking out four in her three innings on the mound.
At the plate, the Zephs were led by Karly Klein who was 3-3, including two triples. Also connecting for extra-base hits were Gabrielle Molitoris who launched a homer, while Mackenzie Guzy had a double.
Berg-Townsend would like to see her team continue its upward trajectory, believing they could make a run as they've done in the last couple of years once they got that first win. The two consecutive wins puts their record at 2-5 overall, and 1-5 in the EPC.
"I'm looking for some productive play and some more wins this week," said Berg-Townsend.
