LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Spring 2015: trying to be patient

Ask any baseball coach in the area about the weather this spring and you'll probably get the same answer from all of them.

"It's been the worst," said Freedom head coach Nick D'Amico.

That pretty much summed up how March and the early part of April has been for the coaches in the area, who have struggled to get outside, as well as play their games.

Through the second week of April, teams on average had four games postponed on their schedule, which became even worse last week because of rain that riddled the area for the most part of the week.

With teams being shackled to indoor facilities or parking lots for the most part of the preseason, just working their way to being outside was a step in the right direction.

"I don't think in the 12 years that I've been coaching that we've never not been out on the field before we played our first game," D'Amico said. "You know when you have to play five games in six days, it definitely takes a toll on your team. It's good if you have a couple extra arms, but for teams that don't have that, it could be a problem."

Getting past problems is something that Liberty head coach Andy Pitsilos tends to figure out, as the baseball field behind Frank Banko Field has held up well through the early part of spring.

But after another week of rain, which canceled another two games for the 'Canes, Pitsilos would like Mother Nature to ease weather related issues for him.

"You know there's not much you can do about the weather," he said. "The winter was just tough because it kept snowing. Our field has handled everything pretty well, but with the rain again last week, it forces you to try and maybe get some double-headers in to catch up. You just hope that, at some point, you get a good run of weather so you can get into a rhythm."

Bethlehem Catholic's field has had a hard time playing host so far this season, but longtime coach Mike Grasso, just takes things in stride.

"I just look at it as something that we need to deal with and be patient about," he said. "We've tried to work things around in our schedule where we would switch home games this year with teams in order to get games in, but that hasn't worked either because their fields weren't good enough to play on. It's just one of those years where it seems like it's tough now, but hopefully everything will work out in the end for everybody."
