Pates, Hawks have one loss
Approaching the East Penn Conference Tennis Tournament next week, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic's tennis teams have only one loss apiece this season.
The Patriots' first defeat came last Thursday when they lost to Parkland 4-2.
"That was the closest anyone came to beating Parkland," said Ross Sonnenblick, Freedom's number three singles player.
The Trojans have been consistently dominating their opponents 7-0 since their season opener last month. This time, Sonnenblick and Freedom's number one singles player, Andrew Sinai, won their matches against Parkland.
Sinai defeated Nick Kshatri 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, and Sonnenblick defeated Peter Harrison 6-1, 6-4.
Freedom freshman, Aidan Bodeo-Lomicky, lost a close match to Nate Lyman at number two singles 4-6, 5-7.
At number two doubles, Ronak Desai and Jack Fried lost to Aneesh Kapoor and Alex Wu 4-6, 1-6. Matt Connors and Jon Fiorentino lost their first match of the season to Nick Hawk and Kishan Unija 3-6, 3-6 at number three doubles, and at number four doubles, Nainjot Singh and Jonathan Chu lost to Alex Son and Peter Son 2-6, 1-6.
Sonnenblick said, "The match today managed to boost our confidence because we know we can contend with anyone."
On Saturday, Bethlehem Catholic defeated Allentown Central Catholic 6-1. The Hawks' only loss so far this season is to Freedom.
Becahi coach George Harmanos said, "We've won some big matches. We beat Nazareth, which was nice, and we handled Central Catholic pretty easily. We're having a good season, and I think the senior leadership is making a difference."
Niko Franekic recovered from a 5-2 deficit in the second set against Central's Austin Grace to win at number one singles 6-2, 6-2. Ryan Schmidt defeated Chris Dellasalla 6-1, 6-0 at number two singles, and Peter Demyan defeated Darius Sorrentino 6-0, 6-0 at number three singles.
At number one doubles, Becahi's Andrew Kaeser and Danny Deshler defeated Matt Lasalle and Kevin Jiang 8-6. John Corley and David Napierkowski defeated Anthony Harig and Craig Peoples 6-3, 6-0 at number two doubles, and Henry Gao and Hesshanth Jeyarangdan defeated Pete Rittenhouse and Adam Werner 6-2, 6-0 at number three doubles.
