Freedom falls to Red Rovers
A promising beginning to Freedom's game against Easton turned into disappointment for the Patriots in their ultimate 9-3 loss to the Red Rovers last Thursday.
After Freedom first baseman Kylee Schwind walked in the second inning shortstop Brenda Reninga hit a triple to left center. Schwind scored, as did Reninga, on an overthrow by Easton.
Reninga said, "She was throwing outside, so it was a little frustrating. I tried to stay calm and get Kylee in. It felt good to get points on the board."
Easton scored one run in the top of the third inning, and Freedom scored another in the bottom of the third.
Hunter Schantz, the Patriots' designated hitter, had a hit up the middle for a double and scored when Reninga reached first base on an error.
That would be the last run of the game for Freedom, and the beginning of a fourth inning rally for Easton in which the Red Rovers took a 7-3 lead.
A bases loaded double to right field by Easton's Kylie Sutton did the most damage, scoring three runs, and Cathryn Cusano's line drive up the middle scored Sutton.
Freedom coach Nora Borger said, "We made some mistakes on the field. Our defense has to make the plays. We left some runners stranded, and we had some opportunities."
The Patriots will have played five games in five days by Press deadlines, which includes a 6-3 victory over Stroudsburg.
"You just keep going and going, hoping things will work out," Borger said.
Also last week, Liberty defeated Allen 15-5, and Bethlehem Catholic defeated Northampton 7-3.
Tailing 2-0 after the first half-inning of play, Liberty answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead over Allen last Thursday in damp, rainy conditions. The Hurricanes took advantage of some sloppy Allen play in the bottom of the second and scored six runs in that frame to extend the lead to 9-2.
Kristin Kaleycik hit a home run in the win and Reyna Dejesus hit a double and knocked in three runs. Victoria Schmidt had two doubles.
Becahi also trailed early in its game on Saturday - a home game played at Northampton.
The Kids took a 2-1 lead after one inning, but the Hawks scored four in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Julia Sledz was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Martina Calluori and Alexa Panuccio were both 2-for-3.
Panuccio picked up the win for the Hawks.
