Tennis beats K-Kids
The Whitehall boys tennis team netted their first victory last week, rising to the occasion in two crucial three-set matches in edging Northampton.
After being on the opposite end of those close matches, the Zephs strung together two singles wins and two doubles wins to upend the Konkrete Kids, 4-3.
The keys to the win were the performances by Gavin Meyers at their No. 3 singles, and the play of Jeremy Lim and Jordan Saliby at No. 3 doubles. Both went three sets, with Meyers falling behind early, 6-3, but rallying after that setback to win the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Lim and Saliby emerged victorious in their match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
That duo has been sharp since they were paired together, winning three consecutive matches, including a hard fought three-setter to Bangor on Monday. Berg said that they are undefeated at No. 3 doubles, a definite building block moving forward.
"I was really impressed with Jeremy and Jordan last Thursday and today," said head coach Alex Berg after Monday's match against the Slaters. "They've been on a roll."
Lim and Saliby were tested against the Kids, needing to rebound after a second set loss, drawing them even at a set apiece. The pair were able to lock in again, holding off Dominic Jackson and Troy Adams 6-4 in the final set for the win. That win assured the team a victory, and was followed by another nail-biter against the Slaters on Monday that also went three sets. In that duel, Lim and Saliby outlasted Jon Absalom and Derek Kaiser in the final set, 10-7. The pair won the first set 6-1, then had to rebound after a 7-5 loss to win in that final tiebreaker.
Berg likes that kind of resiliency and wants to instill it in all his players.
"They're showing that fight you need," said Berg.
They aren't the only doubles team having success. Max Nuscher and Daniel Herrera-Acevado also have a winning record this season. Berg said that they've been able to overcome adversity as well, as witnessed by their win over Pocono Mountain East last week, prevailing in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
They've also made an impact at No. 2 doubles, giving the boys a lethal combination at both 3 and 2.
Berg said that the pair also showed some of that tenacity against Bangor, fighting back after being down 3-0 in the first set to win three games, eventually succumbing 6-3 to the Slaters combo of Chris Csencsits and Mike Mazola. They also lost the second set by the same score. Berg said that the service game of the Bangor team carried the day, noting that one of their serves was nearly impossible to return.
"They were really challenging them," said Berg.
In the Northampton match, Nuscher and Herrera-Acevedo dispatched Ethan Schwartz and Kevin Trinkle in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
The Zephs also got a big win from No. 2 singles Izzy Ahmed. The senior only lost one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory, giving the Zephs another singles victory.
It was a good team win, one that bodes well for their confidence.
"Everybody seemed to come together," said Berg. "We had our struggles, but fought through it."
Right now, he's still trying to get them to clean up their little mistakes, and also making sure they keep a positive attitude when things aren't going their way.
