Softball team picks up come-from-behind wins

Softball coach John Eyer may need some new relaxation techniques before the season is over if his team keeps playing like they have in the first week of the season.

It's not that the team has played badly, they're off to a 3-0 start, but it's how they've gotten to that record that is causing the anxiety.

After a relatively easy 8-4 win over Allen to open the season, the Lady Hornets had to come from behind in each of their next two games.

After taking a quick 2-0 lead against Nazareth, Emmaus trailed 5-3 going to the bottom of the sixth inning.

Emmaus went on to score four runs in the inning, two of which came on an RBI double from Erin Schmick, who finished the game with three hits.

Laura Rau, who picked up a complete game win, with ten strikeouts in the season-opening win against Allen, came on in relief against Nazareth and pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings to get the win. Rau also had two hits and an RBI in the game.

In their third game of the week, Emmaus trailed Northampton 2-0 going to the bottom of the fourth, but scored single runs in their half of the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mirando O'Donald picked up a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and then went to third on a bad throw.

Cassie Burke and Rau then drew walks, bringing Morgan Patterson to the plate. Patterson doubled to open the bottom of the sixth inning and later scored to tie the game.

In the seventh, her long fly ball to left field was good enough for a game-winning sacrifice fly that kept Emmaus' perfect record intact. Faith Montgomery had two RBI in the win over the Northampton and Rau again threw a complete game to get the win, making her the winning pitcher in all three of the Green Hornets' wins.

Coming into the season, Eyer saw Rau as the ace of the staff, but also has Ciara Wippel and Sarah Mohr at his disposal on the mound and was prepared to use all three pitchers as needed.

Wippel and Mohr pitched against Nazareth before giving way to Rau late in the game.

Emmaus has gotten offensive contributions from a number of sources in the early going. Wippel had a three-run home run and Alyssa Krasnansky had a triple and two RBI in the win over Allen.

Emmaus will host East Stroudsburg North at Kiwanis Field on Thursday and then host Hamburg Saturday at Patriots Park.

After that, it's a trip to Stroudsburg on Monday and a home game against Pocono Mountain East next Wednesday.
