LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Patriots look to stay unbeaten in the EPC

It's the type of start that Freedom was hoping for as they entered the 2015 season, and despite the odd weather preventing them from seeing time on the field, the Pates remain unbeaten in East Penn Conference action through early this week.

Freedom (3-1) took care of business last week, posting two league wins in as many games, but falling to Wilson on Saturday in non-conference play with a 10-2 defeat.

For head coach Nick D'Amico, getting on the field for the first time last week has prevented his team from fully acclimating to the rigors of the outdoor game, but the Pates didn't miss a beat, outlasting Northampton 5-4 and controlling Pocono Mountain East 5-2.

"Very happy and pleased with where the guys are right now," said D'Amico. "To get out on the field just last week, for us to be able to play very clean games is very important and that's a credit to them because of the hard work they're putting in."

Pitchers Zak Gagnon and John Yocum helped pick up the wins for the Pates last week, as Yocum threw against the K-Kids and allowed four hits and two runs in the win, as well as belting a two-run homerun to help his cause, as Northampton wasted an opportunity with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, allowing Freedom to survive.

Last Thursday's game with PME was a bit more different, as a pair of Mario McIntyre home runs, as well as another home run from Yocum helped propel the host Patriots to a comfortable win over their northern counterparts.

Gagnon earned the win on the mound, allowing three hits, three walks and two runs, while striking out three.

"We definitely have a lot of guys that we can put out there," D'Amico. "We're a deep team and we can count on all of them. Even the guys that are on the bench are quality players."

Getting out to a quick start on the season isn't something D'Amico has focused on so far, but is happy its come to fruition.

"I haven't really talked to them about that," he said. "These guys know what's expected of them. If they play good, clean baseball, they know they'll do well."
