LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LHS off to hot start

Liberty High School's softball team opened the 2015 season with two mercy rule victories, one over Pottsville 10-0, and one over Pleasant Valley 15-5.

Liberty coach Sam Carrodo said, "Twenty-five runs in ten innings. It's not bad. We're staying humble, but hopefully, it continues."

Sophomore shortstop, Kristin Kaleycik, started her varsity career with a home run on her first pitch in the game against Pottsville last week.

"It was an outside pitch, and I went with it. I was really excited," she said.

Kaleycik also had a double and another home run in the same game.

"I try to work hard, and I guess it pays off. I'm just happy we were up and beat them," said Kaleycik.

Sophomore left fielder Reyna DeJesus had a triple and a home run in the Hurricanes' game against Pleasant Valley, also last week. The triple came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Liberty scored six runs.

Pitcher Michaela Brunnaben started off with a line drive to left field for a double, Precious Torres walked, and Jess Watts singled, scoring Brunnaben.

"That was a good at bat. I was doing well, and I had a lot of confidence out there," Brunnaben said.

After Brunnaben scored, DeJesus hit a triple into the right field corner.

DeJesus said, "I saw the bases were loaded, and I was just trying to get a hit."

Right fielder Kayla Wirth hit a double past third base, scoring DeJesus, and Kaleycik, who made a big catch in the top of the fifth inning, got to second base after the ball bounced off the foot of Pleasant Valley's third baseman.

Regarding that catch, Kaleycik said, "I saw it was going out of the infield, but I wasn't sure how far back Ally [Kundrik] was."

Brunnaben was the winning pitcher for the Hurricanes in the Pleasant Valley game, and Victoria Schmidt got the win in Liberty's game against Pottsville.

Brunnaben said, "I was so nervous, to be honest, because a lot of pressure comes with varsity, but our defense is solid, and our hitting is solid."

This is the kind of start-to-the-season Coach Carrodo was looking forward to.

"Everything we're trying to do with them, they're doing, and they're doing it right. It was so awesome to see those smiles. They're believing right now, and that's huge," he said.
