LHS beats Wilson in extras

Andy Pitsilos knew he had a young team heading into this spring, but sitting at 3-1 early in the week certainly is something that will make any coach with a young roster happy.

The Hurricanes capitalized on that during Monday's 4-3 non-conference victory over Wilson West Lawn in extra innings.

Ben Kraihanzel crossed the plate for the winning run, as the Hurricanes had the bases loaded and the Bulldogs provided a gift by hitting Ryan Wescoe at the plate to give the Hurricanes the win.

"Yeah, it was a good win to pick up for us," Pitsilos said. "We're a young team and anytime you can come away from games like this with a win, it's a positive."

Pitcher Alexis Calderon went all eight innings on the mound for the Hurricanes in the win, throwing 119 pitches, allowing eight hits, two earned runs, striking out six and walking two. Pitsilos is hoping to get another start out of him Friday against Whitehall and didn't have a problem finishing the game out in order to keep other arms fresh in the rotation.

"He looked just as strong in the eighth as he did in the first couple innings," he said. "He threw a great game for us and he's young too, so it was good day for him."

Liberty trailed 2-0 in the third inning, but came back to tie the game up at two apiece following a Ryan Wescoe bunt in the fifth. Logan Steidinger then gave the 'Canes a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single, but two errors in the sixth inning, where Liberty threw two balls away during a situation, allowed Wilson to score a run and bring the game level.

"That was a disappointing sequence where we threw the ball around and got sloppy," Pitsilos said, "but we were able to come back from that. It's always good when those types of things don't cost you."

What he also hopes doesn't cost him this week is more weather related issues as Pocono Mountain West (Tuesday), Allen (Thursday) and Whitehall (Friday) are all on the docket this week.

"We know it's going to rain, so we'll see what happens to the schedule," he said. "We can only control so many things, but it's good that we have six pitchers, even though three are sophomores and three are juniors."
