Hurricanes trying to prove themselves
Liberty's volleyball team is proving to be the leader of the pack in the East Penn Conference's Steel Division, getting wins over Freedom, Bethlehem Catholic and Easton to kickstart their season, but the 'Canes are still hungry.
An opening season loss to Emmaus in five games may have proved to be a catalyst for the Hurricanes (3-1) winning their next three matches, but this week will test their mettle again, as they take on Whitehall (2-2) and Parkland (3-0).
Head coach Neid Ammary knows it'll be a continued test of what his team has learned since their Emmaus defeat.
"Since that loss, we have reminded ourselves that we're not good enough yet, so we've gone back to work on some of the basics of our performance identity," Ammary said. "Whitehall and Parkland are two other great programs as well, and they will be tough to overcome.
"We're going to make mistakes and be pressured by them, but hopefully we can use our intelligence and athleticism to make the right adjustments and execute. We believe we can match up with any team out there and just need to be sharp at the right moments to earn those big wins."
With the match against Parkland being more of a barometer with where this team stands with the current upper echelon of EPC teams, Ammary will lean on some of the guys on the team that have proven themselves this year with quality play.
"Junior middle hitter Brett Bosak has played pretty well for us, as has junior outside hitter Logan Priestas and senior opposite hitter Ryan McGuire," he said. "We need those guys to keep up their productivity, and we need some of our other guys to step up and make a few more plays, especially because we just lost senior outside hitter David Strohl for the rest of the season due to a sudden kidney problem that requires surgery.
"Mike Silvestri and Grady Hackett are guys that have been steady scorers for us, and we think they are on the verge of some explosive performances."
Freedom (2-2) has swept three games in their wins over Easton and Bethlehem Catholic, but have been only able to steal one game from their losses against Liberty and Southern Lehigh. The Pates take on Allen Thursday night.
Bethlehem Catholic (0-2) have been swept in both of their losses to Liberty and Freedom, but looked to get back on track against Easton and Allen this week.
