Win
The Whitehall baseball team finally got on the field this week, and while their schedule may have been in hibernation due to some stubborn cold weather, their bats quickly warmed up to the task and welcomed the new spring season with a bang.
With the steady ping that rivals the trill of any songbird to a scholastic baseball fan's ears, the Zephs banged out 11 hits en route to an 11-2 victory over Bethlehem Catholic on Monday afternoon. They scored runs in every inning except the fourth, taking some of that Myrtle Beach mojo with them up north. They've now scored 17 runs over two games, and managed to add three more to that total before Tuesday's game against Allentown Central Catholic was suspended because of snow.
Head coach Shaun O'Boyle said it was nice to get back on the field, albeit briefly, after their weeklong layoff. The team didn't show any signs of rust against the Golden Hawks, scoring a run in the bottom of the first off a Nicholas Delp single to begin their crooked number barrage.
"Since we've been back, we're actually hitting the ball pretty well, even in the cold weather," said O'Boyle.
Gianni Sinatore had two hits and a walk in the opener, including a double and three RBIs to help get the Zephs to 2-0 on this young season.
Sinatore said it's a matter of making good contact when the weather isn't really conducive to baseball.
"We just have to put the ball in play," said Sinatore. "It's tough to field the ball when it's this cold out because your hands are cold."
That rang true as the Golden Hawks committed three errors in the game, allowing the Zephs to capitalize on those miscues.
Sinatore's double to the left-center gap scored a run in the fourth, while Ruben "Javy" Rodriguez also had a good day at the plate with a double and RBI. Also knocking in runs for the Zephs were Noah Kline, Jake Meyers, while starting pitcher Alex Bruneio helped his own cause by knocking in a pair against the Hawks.
Bruneio went five strong innings to earn the victory. He allowed just one earned run during that span, fanning six and walking five in leading the Zephs to their first league victory. Zach Gilbert finished in relief for the Zephs.
It was an impressive start to the season by a young team.
"They played well," said O'Boyle. "They hit the ball, played good defense, and like I said, if we make the routine plays, we're going to be tough to beat."
On Tuesday against the Vikings, the Zephs once again got an early lead. This time Sinatore drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run in the bottom of the second. They plated two more runs, including another sacrifice fly RBI for Rodriguez, until the snow came down, halting play in the bottom of the fourth with the Zephs up 3-0.
The cold weather didn't seem to bother starter Tyler Kline who put up four goose eggs against the Hawks in his initial outing this season.
O'Boyle said that he's encouraged by their early success.
"I like the way this team battles," said O'Boyle. "It's a young group but there's good seniors on the team with real good senior leadership and these guys are buying into it. And for a young group they're swinging the bat. They're aggressive."
Sinatore was also encouraged by how they performed out of the chute.
"It was a good way to start the season," said Sinatore.
