Kempton Community Center to name pavilion after Lu Dotterer

The pavilion at the Kempton Community Center will be named after Luella K. "Lu" Dotterer, 89, of Kempton, who died March 20, 2015, in The Lutheran Home at Topton.

A member of the Kempton Community Center for 49 years until 2001, she was mainly responsible for booking the entertainment for the Kempton Fair, most notably her friend, Willy Nelson.

According to Kempton Community Center President Dennis Reiss, the tenative name for the structure would be the "Luella Dotterer Music Pavilion."

Lu was predeceased by her husband Melvin T. Dotterer in 1979.

Born in Weisenberg Township, she was a daughter of the late Walter A. and Edith M. (Smith) George.

A clerk in the Kempton Post Office for almost 14 years, she retired in 1987.

Prior to that, she was a domestic in the Allentown area during the 1960s and 1970s, and earlier, she worked in the former Burkey Knitting Mill, Hamburg.

A faithful member and active volunteer at the Weisenberg Lutheran Church, New Tripoli, since 1945, she helped deliver Meals on Wheels in Berks County for many years.

She was also a member of the Kempton and Virginville fire companies.

Her survivors include daughters Judith A., wife of Dennis M. Stetzler and Joan E. Dotterer, both of Lenhartsville; grandchildren Scott and Steve Stetzler and Amy, wife of Jason Wisser, and two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Logan Wisser.

She was predeceased by sisters Lillian Werley, Agnes Hausman and Anna Stump and brothers Charles and Robert Peiffer, and Harvey and Lester George.
