County coroner discusses suicide, overdose
At the March 11 Coplay Town Watch meeting, Scott Grim, Lehigh County coroner, presented a talk entitled "Teen and Young Adult Suicide and Drug Overdose."
Grim relayed that these problems have reached near epidemic proportion in Lehigh County. He emphasized the importance of schools, parents, police departments, youth organizations, local governments and churches working together to address the pervasive drug problem in Lehigh County.
He also said the issue is a nationwide problem.
The topic of stigma was also addressed. He applauded the Communities That Care efforts to address a number of varied issues school-aged children face.
In other CTW business, it was announced that the 21st annual children's bike derby will be held Saturday, June 13, 8:30-11 a.m., on the St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church grounds at South Fifth Street, Coplay.
The Whitehall Crime Watch has been invited to attend, and Coplay or Whitehall children 2 to 13 years of age are invited to participate in the event.
All entrants will receive a free bike helmet and other prizes.
A $50 gift card will be drawn and awarded to one participant.
The bike derby is co- sponsored by Coplay Town Watch, Coplay Police Department and Coplay Athletic Club.
The Coplay Town Watch also began early planning discussions for its annual National Night Out held in August, the spring Properties of Merit program and its annual Coplay awards reception held in October.
The CTW plans to continue its American Club of Coplay prepared hoagie and sandwich sale this May. Two sales have already been held in 2015, with three more planned. An ongoing Tastefully Simple fundraiser continues.
There was a discussion about enlarging the volunteer numbers to make the CTW stronger. If you are interested in joining one of its eight committees, contact Kevin at keppel1976@gmail.com or 484-767-3094 or Bill at 610-751-2745 or billleiner@ aol.com.
