Hawks strong at singles

Bethlehem Catholic High School tennis coach George Harmanos believes that the Hawks' strength will be in its singles players this season.

Returning at number one and number two, respectively, are Niko Franekic and Ryan Schmidt. Peter Demyan will play at number three. All are seniors.

"I feel good about singles. They played all four years, and they're great athletic kids. Part of it is confidence at number one and two because they're back at those positions. Peter is a steady player. He had a great season at number three doubles last year," Harmanos said. "The big unknown is doubles, but we have some combos that we like at the present time."

Luke Mesko and John Corley are currently at number two. David Napierkowski and Yingyuan Gao are at number three, and Jack Jiang and Hesshanth Jaydranghan are at number four.

"I feel our doubles will be improving during the season. Our doubles will be critical to winning matches, and we're focusing on getting them ready for the big-time matches," said Harmanos.

Last year, the Hawks placed third in the conference.

"We should be in the top three or four. We'll be able to compete with Liberty and Freedom. Emmaus beat us in a close match last year. Pleasant Valley and Stroudsburg are traditionally good," Harmanos said. "Hopefully we'll get a good seed for districts."

Becahi played its first match last Thursday, defeating William Allen, 7-0.
