PHS tennis seeks fourth straight D-11 title
With a full 10 years of dominating the Lehigh Valley Conference in tennis, the Parkland boys team looks to take its success to the new Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
Michael Hingston comes into his third season as the team's coach and has a strong core of returning players to lean on for the inaugural season of the EPC.
Besides winning the final LVC championship, Parkland also captured its third straight District 11 title in convincing fashion. The bad news for their opponents is that the Trojans graduated just one player, Nishad Gothoskar, from last year's team, which finished at 15-1, leaving them well stocked for the 2015 season.
Parkland didn't lose until reaching last year's PIAA tournament and falling to Lower Merion in the first round.
Nick Kshatri, Nate Lyman and Peter Harrison are all back to fill the top three spots in singles. Aneesh Kapoor and Alex Wu will make up the number two doubles team, with Kishan Unjia and Nick Hawk filling the third team slot. Fourth team doubles is still an open competition.
"We have good depth and we should be strong in both singles and doubles," said Hingston. "Our singles trio of Kshatri, Lyman and Harrison are all seasoned veterans and we'll look to them to guide the younger players."
One of the marks of a good high school program is to continue to find young players to fill gaps on the roster. Hingston has three sophomore players on the roster that he expects will help throughout the season.
"We expect significant contribution from a strong contingent of young players led by Kishan Unjia, Nick Hawk and Jesse Hance," he said.
The new league alignment has perennially tough Stroudsburg now in the same conference with Parkland. The two teams met in the District 11 finals last season, with Parkland downing the Mounties 3-0 to win the conference title.
Besides having to beat Stroudsburg, the Trojans also had to contend with East Stroudsburg North, another new conference foe, to get through the first round of districts. With six new league opponents, Hingston is optimistic about his team's chances, but also knows that there isn't an easy path to another conference title,
"The new league features new teams and some great players that will make the challenge of winning the conference championship even greater than it has been in the past," he said. "We look forward to continued success in both league and district competition."
Weather permitting, Parkland is set to open their schedule Thursday at East Stroudsburg South and is then set to play at Bethlehem Catholic on Friday. The Trojans' home opener is Tuesday against Pleasant Valley.
