Feyrer seventh at states
Mina Feyrer knew this time around would be different.
In her fourth and final trip to the PIAA State Swimming Championships at Bucknell University recently, Feyrer experienced a different feeling than her three previous stints. For starters, Feyrer began to realize it was the final event in an illustrious high school career, one that was marked by a sixth-place finish at the same place two years ago as a sophomore.
This time around, Feyrer finished seventh in the 100 fly and took her final place at the seventh-place podium.
"Everything seemed a lot faster," Feyrer reflected. "The times seemed to be much faster and so were the swimmers. It was a bittersweet feeling. For me, it is hard to believe the high school season is over.
"The competition is tougher than it has ever been. There are just so many good swimmers today. The sport has really grown and it has shown through the competition."
Head coach Pete Rile will certainly miss his senior who was a mainstay in the program and now will extend her career forward to the University of Delaware.
"Mina (Feyrer) finished her career at WHS with the same high quality performance at states as she had in all four years on the team," said Rile. "She is still on an upward trend in her career, and is heading to the University of Delaware.
"Mina's performance at states was typical of her whole career, setting records and finishing strong. We are extremely proud of her finish at states, not just medaling, but resetting the school record.
"She has proven that through dedication and hard work she can compete on the highest stage of high school swimming. She is one of the most accomplished swimmers in Whitehall history, and she is instrumental in the success that this team has had for the past four years."
Feyrer plans to continue to swim for the Parkland Acquatics Club until she begin practicing with the Delaware program in August.
However, she soon won't forget her days as a Zephyr.
"I learned a lot here, but I know it is time to move on," she added. "The coaches here showed me all of the little details that made me a better swimmer. We pushed each other along the way and we became a very close team.
"We have definitely made this a better program, and I will certainly miss being a part of it."
