Saltwater Expo coming up this weekend
With all the sports show over the winter, one unique show remains that caters to avid saltwater fishermen.
The annual Saltwater Fishing Expo takes place March 20-22 at the Garden State Exhibition Center in Somerset, NJ. It is a one-of-a-kind sportfishing show that features the top fishing pros in America and the latest saltwater tackle.
The show offers gear for inshore, offshore, surfcasting and big game fishing. You'll not find a local tackle shop that offers this vast variety of saltwater gear.
Company reps will also be on hand to showcase their new gear and equipment for the upcoming saltwater season, including Shimano, Daiwa, St. Croix, Bimini Bay, Quantum, Okuma, Humminbird, Zee-Bass, Van Staal, Release Reels and other large and small tackle makers.
The show is also the perfect time to book a charter at the Jersey shore, Bahamas, the Keys and other exotic locations.
Seminar speakers run the gamut from Dave Schunke, saltwater tournament champion; Capt. Al Ristori editor of Salt Water Sportsmen and Mike Laptew, noted fishing videographer for National Geo. His seminar show alone is worth the hour-long trip to the show.
Laptew is considered "The Diving Fisherman" with his amazing underwater footage that will show his latest video "The Amazing Underwater World of Game Fish and How to Hook a Monster." Included is dramatic close-up footage of monster striped bass, fluke, tog, bonito and the prey they eat.
The video also shows how top pros such as Greg Myerson, Capt. Blaine Anderson and Tony Stetzko, make their catches.
For surf fishermen, you don't want to miss Ron Arra's surf casting instruction and techniques that made him a five-time surfcasting champ. He's been surfcasting for more than 50 years.
If you regularly fish the Jersey shore you may know the name Capt. Gene Quigley, co-owner of Shore Catch Guide Service, the northeast's largest fly and light tackle guide service. A New Jersey native, Quigley fishes both inshore and offshore and specializes in bluefin tuna and trophy striped bass. He consistently lands bluefins over 100 pounds on fly tackle.
In 2013 he was voted one of the Top 100 Fishing Guides in North America by Field and Stream magazine. He's also the chairman of the New Jersey Professional Fly and Light Tackle Guides Association.
Here's a sampling of some of the other seminars planned: Advanced Surf and Jetty Tactics; Raritan Bay Stripers; Inshore Bluefin to Offshore Big Eye; How to Catch Big Blackfish; Bucktail Doormat Fluke; Proper Tackle for Distance Casting; Surfcasting with Less Effort; Finding Bluefin and Mahi; plus, Cast Net demonstrations to mention a few.
The show is also a place to buy unique products and lures that are not found at local tackle shops as their makers make most by hand.
Back again this year is the 3,000-plus pound Great White Shark replica where the entire family can battle the fish while sitting in a fighting chair within the Fishing Simulator.
Sunday is Family Day where kids can enjoy a Scavenger Hunt and Reel Kids Casting Event. The first 100 kids under age 11 and accompanied by a paying adult, will receive a free Plano tackle box.
Show hours are Mar. 20 from 12 p.m.-8 p.m.; March 21 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Mar. 22 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
