Hawks move on in states
Bethlehem Catholic High School's girls basketball team got through the first round of state playoffs with relative ease, defeating Lancaster Catholic 56-36 on Saturday at William Allen High School.
Becahi guard, Jordyn Jones, said, "We didn't know much about them, but that they would come out hungry. Our mindset is that we're still in a championship game, we're not giving in, and we're going all the way."
Jones, in particular, picked up where she left off in the district final, scoring the first four points of the game and adding two more before the end of the first quarter.
"We have a very athletic team, and we're fast. As long as we're running and getting lay-ups and transition lay-ups ... it's not easy. It's a lot of work," she said.
Becahi forward, Kalista Walters, on the other hand, did a 180 since the district final in which she was held to four points against Allentown Central Catholic. On Saturday, Walters scored 27 points and had 17 rebounds.
Lancaster Catholic's Lauren Mills was the first to score for the Crusaders, but not until over five minutes had gone by.
By halftime, the score was 30-8.
"[At halftime, Coach Medina] congratulated us on our lay-ups, and we talked about our defense," said Jones.
Ironically, the Hawks let up on defense just enough in the third quarter for the Crusaders to score 19 points, including a three pointer by Izzy Miller at the buzzer.
"We have to work on that," Jones said.
By the middle of the fourth quarter, Coach Medina replaced his starters after Walters and Maggie Melhem combined for four more points.
This Wednesday, the Hawks will take on District 3's Conrad Weiser at 6 p.m. at Souderton High School in round two of the PIAA State Girls Basketball playoffs.
