Sicinski qualifies for states; Trojan boys place third
With diver Chris Lehman already qualified for states, the Trojan byswimmers took their turn at winning gold in districts last weekend in the District 11 Championships at Parkland High School. When the two-day event was over, Adam Sicinski was added to the list of Parkland boys who will be competing at states.
Sicinski qualified in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, winning gold in both events.
"It's phenomenal. I love the feeling," said Sicinski after winning his second gold medal. "I'm so happy with my races and my district performance and I'm looking to keep it going, going on to states."
In the 100 freestyle, Sicinski beat his friend and closest competitor, Patrick Cobb of Bangor by 63/100 of a second. The two were side-by-side in lanes and waged their latest battle for gold in their usual style.
"That was a really fun race, I was really happy with what I did. The time was fantastic," said Sicinski. "It was a really good race with Patrick racing next to me. I love racing against him, he's great competition and the last 25 [yards], just bringing it home felt amazing."
Sicinski was also part of two relay teams that placed third in their events. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Sicinski was teamed with sophomores Matthew Engler and Hyunbin Kim and freshman Matthew Ceh. He swam the 400 freestyle relay with Engler, Kim and fellow senior Anthony Coates.
Coates also placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle, while Kim finished sixth in the 100 yard butterfly and seventh in the 200 yard freestyle. Coates finished fifth in the 500 yard freestyle and Engler was seventh in the 200 yard IM.
The boys team finished the first day of the meet in second place trailing rival and eventual district team champion Emmaus 227-185. On day two of the meet, Liberty put on a fierce challenge for second and pushed the Trojans down to third, edging them by a final score of 285-269.
The PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships take place March 11-14 at Bucknell University. Lehman and Sicinski both competed in last year's state competition, with Lehman finishing 23rd in the diving preliminaries and Sicinski placing tenth in the 50-yard freestyle.
