'Peter Pan Jr.' onstage at Orefield Middle School

Orefield Middle School Drama Club students have been rehearsing to present their version of the Disney musical "Peter Pan Jr."

This one-act musical, tells the timeless tale of Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up and stop flying and Tinker Bell, who visit Wendy, Michael and John Darling in the nursery at their London home and whisks them off to Never-never Land.

This musical is based on the play by J.M. Barrie and the 1953 Disney film.

Music and lyrics was created by Sammy Cahn, Sammy Fain, Michael Tumes, Xavier Atencio, George Bruns, Jack Lawrence, Frank Churchill, Winston Hibler, Ted Sears, Oliver Wallace and Ray Kelley with the music adapted, arranged and additional Lyrics by Eric Svejcar and David Zellnik.

Mackenzie Lynch, portrays Peter Pan. Emily Babinchak portrays Tinkerbell.

"Peter Pan is a boy who refuses to grow up and lives in Never Land," Lynch said. "He is very brave. He can sometimes be very conceited."

"The thing I love about playing Peter is it is very challenging to play the opposite gender and that makes it a lot of fun."

Lynch said she especially loves the number, "What Makes the Brave Man Brave," because of the fun choreography.

"It's also great to work with such a talented cast and an amazing director and stage manager," Lynch added.

"Tinkerbell has a secret crush on Peter and when he decides to take Wendy to Never Land she gets really jealous," Babinchak said. "So she sets out to destroy Wendy."

"Tinkerbell is a lot like me, besides the part about loving Mackenzie aka Peter Pan. I get to make a bunch of fun expressions. The only problem is Tinkerbell only talks in bells and it is very hard for me to not talk."

Olivia Behr comments on playing Wendy Darling.

"Wendy is the oldest Darling child. She simply loves to tell stories and dreams of going to Never Land," Behr said.

"Through the entire story, she has an innocent admiration toward Peter, which shows through her actions and words."

Behr said Wendy ends up realizing she is destined to grow up and she parts with Peter when she goes back to London.

"My favorite part of the show is when Wendy and the lost boys are back in the secret hideout and she realizes Never Land isn't all fun and games like she thought," Behr stated.

Matt Melchior who plays John Darling and Aaron Finkle who portrays Michael Darling also comment on their roles.

"John Darling is the second oldest Darling child who loves fun, games and adventures," Melchior said.

"He thinks he is the smartest and leads the Lost Boys when he gets to Never Land."

He said his favorite part of the show is singing and dancing with his onstage brother and sister, Aaron and Olivia.

"I am the youngest of the Darling children. I am sort of that boy in Never Land whom everyone thinks is cute and small," Finkle stated. "My favorite part of my character is I have an emotional connection to my teddy bear. I call her Ava."

AJ Syslo plays Captain Hook. Robbie Moore portrays Mr. Smee.

"I play the evil pirate villain Capt. Hook," Syslo said. "Peter Pan cuts off his hand and feeds it to a crocodile. That crocodile has been licking his lips for me ever since."

Syslo said his favorite part of the show is he only gets to use one hand, because he has a hook on the other.

"I also enjoy working with my partner in crime Mr. Smee, a.k.a. Robbie," Syslo stated.

"I play the funny, not-so-smart little guy Mr. Smee, who will do whatever Captain Hook says," Moore said. "He is also very lovable.

"What I enjoyed most is I could experiment with this character and he is very emotional just like me."

The play is directed by Jonathan Lynch with choreography by Lynch and Payton Sherry.

"This year I chose to do "Peter Pan" because I knew it was a show my students would love," Jon Lynch said. "This is a show filled with fun, adventure, magic, and a whole lot of pixie dust. This is a show you can bring the whole family to. We have fairies, pirates, lost boys, and Indians something for everyone."

"The productions here at OMS get better and better each year and this year is no different.

"Since last year's production of 'Beauty and the Beast' the bar has been raised and the students have exceeded my expectations and cleared that bar."

He said support from the parents and community has been absolutely amazing.
