Haddad wins

It has been a postseason of firsts for Parkland's Omar Haddad.

After winning his first district championship a week ago, Haddad followed that up with his first Northeast Regional Class AAA crown during Saturday's championship round.

Haddad knocked off Liberty's Andrew Gunning by a 3-2 margin, following similar footsteps he took to defeat Gunning at districts, as he scored a third-period takedown to pull out another gold medal for the Haddad family.

Haddad's victory led Parkland's charge, as the Trojans advanced three wrestlers to this week's PIAA wrestling championships in Hershey.

"All my brothers have regional championships and now so do I," said Haddad. "It's the fourth time I've wrestled him [Gunning] and I wrestled his older brother last year, so it feels good to get this win again. They're a great wrestling family and I'm just thankful that I was able to add this to my family legacy too."

Joining Haddad in Hershey is junior Jacob Lizak (126) and sophomore Frank Guida (170).

Guida made the center stage again for the Trojans last week, as he had a rematch with Southern Lehigh's Matt Mirth. Unfortunately, the Spartan senior widened the gap this time, scoring a 6-1 decision en route to claiming the title.

Lizak took third with a 4-2 win over Nazareth's Travis Smith to follow in the footsteps of his older brother by reaching Hershey.

The older siblings of each Parkland wrestler in Hershey this year have won state championships in the past, as Ziad Haddad (Bethlehem Catholic), Ethan Lizak (Parkland) and Nick Guida (Parkland) share that family lineage.

"Everybody's goal is to win a state title out there," Haddad said. "Everyone's a great wrestler, so it's anybody's ball game. Whoever puts together the best game plan has a shot to win it and I'm not going to count myself out. I'm going to go after it."

Haddad (38-8) will await the winner of the bout between Zeb Pfeiffer (37-4) of Penn Manor and Billy McGinley (38-8) of Downingtown East for his first round matchup when Class AAA wrestling gets underway Thursday afternoon at the Giant Center.

Guida (27-9) opens the tournament against Gavin Caprio (24-3) of Central Mountain in a weight class that features seven wrestlers with three or less losses on the season.

Lizak (31-11) finds himself in a preliminary match against Sofiane Bensmail (30-11) of North Penn. The winner of that bout takes on Greater Latrobe's Ethan McCoy (23-4) in the first round.
