Mike Frew resigns as Becahi boys hoop coach

Mike Frew's four-year tenure as boys' basketball coach at Bethlehem Catholic came to an end following his formal resignation from the program in an email sent out last week.

Frew compiled a 33-62 record during his time with the Hawks, but this season's 3-19 mark, which ended with a 12-game losing streak, prompted a change.

"With my personal priorities needing to be more on the forefront, I believe a change in leadership for the basketball program is what's best at this time," said Frew. "In four years, my life has also changed and my family has grown.

"My commitments outside of Bethlehem Catholic basketball have increased both personally and professionally in my full time job, and I believe I need a break from coaching at Bethlehem Catholic. I am thankful for the opportunity to develop the student-athletes I have worked with and will miss many of them. I believe the boys' basketball program has been moved forward."

The Hawks reached the District 11 3A championship in 2013 during Frew's second-year at the helm, where they eventually lost to a loaded Central Catholic squad for the district title.

It was the first time the Hawks had reached the postseason in five years. Frew's team then won the LVC East title in 2014 and made an appearance in the league and district playoffs.

But after having several football players decide to not join the team this winter, Frew faced a difficult season ahead with mostly a young squad. Things didn't get better when senior Freddie Simmons didn't finish out this past season.

"We appreciate the passion and the many hours that coach Frew has given to the program over the last four years," said Bethlehem Catholic Athletic Director Chris Domyan. "He worked hard with our student-athletes, always calling them to become better young men and players. We wish coach Frew the best and hope he finds success in the future."

Frew does leave in place a quality feeder-program of 6th, 7th and 8th graders that produced success on the Lehigh Valley Knee-Hi scene.

The Hawks also return quality talent, as the job should be an attractive destination for a new coach.

"As I reflect on my time at Bethlehem Catholic, I am happy that many of my personal goals were reached," said Frew, "but sad in the fact that as my four-year tenure comes to an end, not all my goals were conquered."

The search for a new coach has started and interested applicants should email Domyan at cdomyan@becahi.org if interested.
