Another title for Becahi girls

It seems as though Bethlehem Catholic girls basketball coach Jose Medina always has a bottom line.

And on Saturday, that bottom line of responsiveness won the Hawks the District 11 Class AAA championship over Allentown Central Catholic, 44-31 at Freedom High School. It was the Hawks third-straight District 11 3A title.

"The bottom line was that they had to be responsive to one another, move the ball, and if someone struggles, someone is always there," Medina said.

The only obvious struggle was the first quarter, ending in a six-point deficit for Becahi. But, Tessa Zamilyi's bucket as time was winding down after two scoreless minutes, was a small boost in holding off probable frustration.

"Definitely, every time I get a rebound, I can bring the gap closer, and I was happy to get in and boost the team up," said Zamolyi.

Basically, what Medina told the Hawks before the start of the second quarter was to intensify the defensive pressure, to be ready for anything, and to just continue to stay defensive.

What that created were three consecutive, three-point shots by Nia Mims, Maggie Melhem, and Zamilyi, giving Becahi the lead, 18-15. By halftime, the Hawks led by seven points.

Becahi guard, Jordynn Jones, said, "At halftime we talked about locking up on defense, and as long as we had that, we'd have our offense."

Jones took those offensive opportunities to heart, scoring four-straight points before Central called a timeout.

"I felt so great the whole game. Even my coaches said, 'Jordynn, this is your game,' and they said if she's playing off me, I should shoot, and if she's playing on me, I'm faster than her anyway," said Jones.

The Hawks proceeded to force a turnover before Jones scored another two points on a fast break. Later in the third quarter, the Vikettes threw the ball away, and Becahi guard Nicole Lacherza scored on a great pass from Melhem.

Jones scored four more points in the fourth quarter, two after coming up with a loose ball, and despite the Vikettes holding Kalista Walters to four points, the Hawks' teamwork paid off with a district championship.

Melhem said, "It definitely feels amazing. It was one of our goals all season. We knew they would give us a fight. It's definitely hard [to slow things down] sometimes because they all know how to run the floor, but we trust our coach. I feel so blessed and thankful [for my teammates]. We couldn't have done it without them."

The Becahi girls now move on to the state tournament which begins on Saturday. The Hawks will play at 2:30 against Lancaster Catholic at Allen.
