LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Greater Philly Show scheduled for this weekend

If you missed the Harrisburg sports show, fear not as there are two more upcoming shows, albeit on a smaller scale.

The Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow opens February 26 (and runs to Mar. 1) in Oaks, a suburb of Philadelphia.

Aside from a long list of hunting and fishing vendors, outfitters, displays of boats, ATV's and trucks, the show also hosts numerous seminars.

Headlining the seminar schedule is Pennsylvania's own Mike Iaconelli, bass fishing pro who won last years BASS Elite tournament held on the Delaware River. He also won eight B.A.S.S. tournaments dating back to 1999 at Lake Champlain. Mike will divulge how he does it when on the competitive water.

Joining him is Brandon Palaniuk, another popular fishing pro who won twice on the Bassmaster Elite series.

If you'd like a little humor with your fishing instructions, Dave Mercer, host of TV's "Facts of Fishing" and emcee for the Bassmaster Classic and Elite series, will have you laughing when he mixes humor with fishing, something he does more than 250 days a year.

For die-hard fly fishermen, Jack Montague, a Federation of Flyfishers Master Certified casting instructor and owner of Wolf Glen Fly Fishing schools in Punta Gorda, will share his experiences that range from New England to the Keys to Alaska where he spent six years teaching on the Alagnak River.

For hunters, Lane Benoit, C.J. Winand and Pete Fiduccia (the Deer Dr.) will offer tips and strategies for taking big whitetails.

Pete's wife Kate, will present "Going Wild in Kate's Kitchen" as she prepares some wild game recipes for showgoers to sample.

Other seminars run the gamut of Yellowfin Tuna Techniques; Season Tidal Water Tactics (Delaware River); Live Shark Encounters; Bird Dog Training, Making the Most of Fishing Electronics; Catching More Seabass and Fluke; Honk and Gobble; Deer Cutting; Jetty Fishing along the Jersey Coast; Biology of the Rut and many more interesting topics.

If you don't care to drive to Philly, the Lehigh Valley Sportsman Show is set to run March 6-8 this year at the Agri-Plex in the Allentown Fairgrounds.

Dennis Brozey, from P.B.M. Productions in Fogelsville, has gone to a three-day format from last year's two-day show.

This years show will feature local seminar talent including Dave Poerio Jr., who claims to be a superior deer hunter as he runs Almost Heaven Outfitters LLC with hunts in Wyoming County, and in West Virginia where he has a bow hunting only area. He's also a teacher for hunting 101, Ground Truth and other topics.

Also on hand will be Josh Day, from Pulaski, NY, who has a guide service on the Salmon River in NY. He'll describe the fishing opportunities for salmon and steelhead in that state.

Featured this is the NWTF's Jakes Indoor Shooting Range for youths 17 and younger. It's part of the Jakes' Take Aim program that was funded by Larry Potterfield and his wife, owners of Midway USA shooting and hunting online buying store.

Archery Addictions of Walnutport, will hold a junior archery fun shoot for kids 12 and under with first place taking home a Matthews Mission compound bow plus an archery lesson gift certificate.

With Cabela's as the major sponsor, Brozey was able to keep ticket prices at a low $10 while kids 12 and younger are free. Show hours are Friday 1-7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. And there's always free fairgrounds parking.
