Luke Werner stays hot
To say that Luke Werner is on a tear would be a valid statement following his performance at districts last weekend.
The Liberty sophomore stormed away with the first district championship of his career, pinning Bethlehem Catholic's Sean Redington in 3:35 during Saturday's 106-pound championship to give the Hurricanes their only district champion this season.
KJ Fenstermacher (113) and Andrew Gunning (220) also reached the finals, but both came away with silver medals, as Liberty advanced five wrestlers to regionals and finished seventh in the team standings with 98.5 points.
Werner was the story for the 'Canes, as he pinned all four of his opponents in 9:44, coming just short of topping Bethlehem Catholic's Andrew Dunn (HWT) for the pinner award.
"I felt like I was peaking at the right time and felt like I was in control of every match," said Werner of his performance. "Right now, I'm just doing everything I can to win a state title."
Coming off a fourth-place finish at districts as a freshman, Saturday's title was monumental for Werner, as it marked the first high school tournament he's won.
"I've took second at a bunch of tournaments and it feels good to finally get this under my belt," he said. "I keep those silver medals in a drawer at home, but I'm going to hang this one [gold medal] up with my state medal from last year."
Fenstermacher lost a 5-3 decision to Northampton's Dan Moran, as the match became feisty at the end with words being exchanged, but Moran shrugged it off as old friends competing.
"We've been friends for a long time," Moran said. "We talked it out and apologized to each other and it's all good now."
Gunning saw Parkland's Omar Haddad score the only takedown of the match inside of 30 seconds left in the third period to fall by a 3-2 decision.
John Ritter (138) and Kyle Gildner (HWT) also qualified for regionals.
Ritter defeated Blue Mountain's Christian Gosch 6-5 to take fifth, while Gildner fell to Freedom's Cordell Cotto by fall in 2:47 to settle for fourth.
