EMMAUS COLUMN Welcome spring

After record breaking cold temperatures in January and February, I am sure many Emmaus residents will join me in shouting "Welcome Spring," on March 20.

The Emmaus Historical Society museum, 563 Chestnut St., will be open for its Winter Wonderland displays through March 7. The museum is open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The society will hold its monthly meeting 7 p.m. March 19. The program, "Toys from the Past" will feature Bob Swaim, who will recount the history of the Slinky and his effort to make the Slinky the Pennsylvania state toy.

The society is also taking orders for its shoofly pie sale. The deadline to order is April 4. To order, call 610-966-6591.

The members have put in a tremendous amount of work at the new museum at 218 Main St. and are looking forward to a grand opening in the near future. The society is still eliciting donations toward the capital campaign. For information, visit www. emmaushistoric-pa.org or emmaushist@ptd.net.

The Emmaus Lions Club will hold its annual "Nite at the Races" March 14 at Upper Milford West District Fire Co., Old Zionsville. Doors open 5 p.m. and the first race runs 6:30 p.m. The event features a night of fun, food, drinks and door prizes. There is a cost for a ticket which includes food and drinks. Also, you can buy a horse and name it for a cost and if your horse wins you win a monetary prize. Tickets are available at Buss Paints or Upper Milford West District Fire Co. The Emmaus Garden Club will meet March 3 at Faith Presbyterian Church, North Second and Cherokee streets. The meeting begins with a noon social time, followed by a 12:30 p.m. program and a business meeting following the program. The program is "Horticulture and Design Tips for Tournament." Club members, Dr. Robert Stamper and Rosemary Gish Ebersole, will share their expert advice on garden club horticulture and design competitions. Bob and his wife Chris have created four acres of home gardens in Zionsville and have exhibited in numerous local garden club tournaments and flower shows. Rosemary is an accredited NGC flower show judge and garden study and landscape design consultant. The public is invited to attend and welcome "Spring" with a day of horticulture and design tips. The Emmaus Winter Farmers' Market will take place 10 a.m. to noon every other Sunday until the regular market starts up again in May. Upcoming dates next month are March 1, 15 and 29. The Winter Market is held at the KNBT parking lot, 235 Main St. For information, visit www.emmausmarket.com.

All senior citizens over the age of 55 are invited to the Emmaus Senior Citizens meetings at St. Matthew's E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The group meets 1 p.m. Fridays. The March programs are March 6: musicians Ray Fenstermaker & Sons; March 13: DJ Dave; March 20: a film and March 27 is game day. For information, call 610-966-4273.

The plans for the Emmaus Public Library's 75th anniversary celebration the week of May 11 to 16 are underway and from what I hear the celebration will be very exciting. The planning committee meets 10 a.m. every Saturday. The public is invited to the meetings to learn more about what the committee is planning and ways to become involved with the celebration.

The Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St. has scheduled the following children's programs for March: Pre-schoolers through sixth graders are invited to join the library staff 7 to 8 p.m. March 5 to hear Dr. Seuss stories in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Also, block parties for all ages, 11 a.m. March 3; Suns story time (two-year old toddlers with an adult) 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays; Stars story time (pre-schoolers three, four and five years) 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays; Literary Lunch for sixth, seventh and eighth graders noon to 1 p.m. March 21; Literary Lunch, Jr. for fourth and fifth graders, noon to 1 p.m. March 7; Teen Read for ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th graders, 7 to 8 p.m. March 12; Twilight Readers for kindergarten and first graders, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. Books and Barks, the read aloud to the Lehigh Valley Therapy Dogs program, will be held in the community room 6:45 to 8 p.m. March 26.

The library staff invites families to the library for a fun film 6 to 8 p.m. March 19. Pajamas, pillows and sleeping bags are encouraged. Slippers are required.

The Pennsylvania Depart- ment of Health will be at the library for free blood pressure screenings 10 a.m. to noon the last Monday of every month.

Barbara Cole will lead an evening's excursion to Downton Abbey featuring discussions, video clips and behind-the-scenes insights into the popular television series. The evening will include scones, 7 p.m. March 16. Registration is required so the staff knows how many scones to bake.

Woven Welcome, the project introduced by Jill Odegaard, art professor at Cedar Crest College and Woven Welcome curator, who brought Woven Welcome, a collaborative project with Woven Welcome-Making Community: Tying Ends and New Beginnings with Lehigh Valley communities and the Allentown Art Museum, to the Emmaus Art Commission's exhibit during Emmaus' SnowBlast, is now at the library. The public is invited 2 to 4 p.m. every Monday to weave a section of the rug which will then become a part of a larger piece to be displayed at the Allentown Art Museum in June. There is no charge.

The Kline's Lane compost center opens March 11. The site is open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (or dusk) Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The electronics recycling dumpster will be open noon to 6 p.m. March 9. This site is open on the second Monday of each month through November.

March 2 is National Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss Day) so get out your favorite book and be sure to read.

Looking ahead, the Kiwanis Club of Emmaus will hold the Walter C. Stoudt Memorial Prayer Breakfast 7:30 a.m. April 3 at Saint John's Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St., Emmaus.
