BC wins D-11 team title
The message that Andrew Dunn sent the Pennsylvania wrestling world over the weekend was pretty clearit's going to be tough to beat him.
Dunn displayed those sentiments with his actions following a dominating display at the District 11 3A wrestling championships.
The Bethlehem Catholic senior pinned all four of his opponents in 8:53 to take home the pinner award, as the Hawks stormed away with the team title, running away from second place Freedom by 126 team points.
The Hawks crowned five champions and advanced 12 wrestlers to this weekend's Northeast Regional 3A tournament to set a statement as powerful as Dunn's.
"My goal coming into the tournament was to pin all my opponents," said Dunn, who moved up from 220 to heavyweight for the postseason. "I've wrestled at heavyweight before and understand how they're going to react and how I can use leverage against them. I think I'm in pretty good shape, so I just try to push the pace and get them on their back.
"None of this would be possible without Niko Camacho letting me bump up [to heavyweight]. He's a good sport and he very well could have been a district champion at heavyweight. He's been practicing with me and he's been a great partner."
Luke Karam (126), Stepehen Maloney (138), Mikey Labriola (152) and Adam Soldridge (160) all came home with their first District 11 3A gold medals, as it was the first time Becahi competed in the 3A postseason since 1979.
After dispatching Parkland's Jake Lizak by a 3-1 decision, Karam didn't feel there was a big difference wrestling with the big schools compared to years past.
"It's the same district basically, I guess it's just for a bigger prize now," he said. "I think we've competed great right now. To have 12 guys get through is great. We're just here to advance to the state tournament."
Maloney defeated Easton's Jacob Montes 3-0 in his finals bout, which was shortly followed up by Labriola's 8-3 decision over Northampton's Cade Moisey.
Soldridge continued the trend with a hard-fought and methodical 3-2 win over Cole Franklin of Emmaus.
Sean Redington (106) and Cole Karam (145) also reached the finals, giving the Hawks finals' representatives in half of the weight classes, but both couldn't come away with wins as Redington ran into a buzzsaw in Liberty's Luke Werner, losing by fall in 3:35, while Karam couldn't get his offense going against Easton's Jimmy Saylor during a 2-0 defeat.
The rest of the Becahi wrestlers that advanced to regionals included: Luke Carty (113, 3rd); Jake Riegel (120, 3rd); Joey Gould (132, 5th); Jody Crouse (182, 4th) and Brandon Blobe (195, 3rd).
Brandon Gallagher (170) fell one spot short of advancing, as he took sixth following a 1-0 loss to Pleasant Valley's Brody Keefe in the consolation finals.
