Kutzler named township manager

Howard Kutzler, who joined South Whitehall staff as director of administration in fall 2013, was unanimously approval by commissioners as township manager during the Jan. 21 meeting.

He has been serving as acting township manager since the departure of Jon Hammer in August 2014.

Board President Christina "Tori" Morgan expressed enthusiasm for Kutzler's appointment.

"We're very excited. Howard brings innovative and creative ideas and a background in community development, zoning, and economic development. We're thrilled," Morgan said.

Kutzler earned a Bachelor's degree in geography and urban planning from West Virginia University.

His professional experience includes serving as community planner, then senior community planner with the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission.

In 1999, he became director of planning and economic development in Bethlehem Township, then advanced to manager in 2010, a position he held until his hiring at South Whitehall.

Kutzler offered comments on the year ahead in the township.

"I'll work closely and collaboratively with the board of commissioners to carry out their policies and work programs," Kutzler said. "The township manager works closely with the commissioners.

"They set the tone. It is my job to implement that.

"We have the new property maintenance code. We want to make sure our ordinances are up-to-date.

"We'll provide the best service we possibly can."
