Pates eye rebound at districts
With team districts behind the Freedom wrestling team, the sole focus for the Patriots is what lies ahead at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium this weekend. Despite falling short of their goal of reaching team states, the Pates can now put their focus on this weekend's District 11 3A tournament.
"The team district tournament was disappointing but we addressed it as a team and moved on," said head coach Brandon Hall. "Our individual goals haven't changed nor has our motivation for success in the postseason. "Much like the regular season, we will take it one match at a time. Hopefully it is a great individual postseason. We are definitely looking forward to getting on the mats and competing again."
Freedom returns three place-winners from last year's tournament, including Dylan Brown (second), Jonah Zych (fourth) and John Callahan (fifth). Brown was a runner-up last year at 106 and will compete at 113 this postseason with the likes of city rival, Liberty's KJ Fenstermacher, at his weight class.
Zych moves up to 126 this year, while Callahan is at 195.
With Hall's goals of placing in the top five overall as a team, it's expected that the Pates should move at least six wrestlers to regionals, with the aforementioned three as leading candidates.
"Certainly everyone needs to have a good showing or their season is over," said Hall. "That being said, the seniors and juniors on this team need to perform to their potential in order for us to accomplish our team and individual goals."
Below is Freedom's lineup for this weekend at their respective weights.
