Hawks set to begin District 11 run in 3A
If Bethlehem Catholic wants any shot at competing with Franklin Regional for the individual team title in Hershey in a few weeks, this weekend's results will pave the way for the Hawks goals down the line.
Becahi makes their first leap into the individual District 11 3A format on Friday when wrestling opens up at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium. With five returning 2A district champions from a year ago in the lineup, it'll be interesting to see how many can repeat, as well as how many wrestlers the Hawks can advance to next weekend's Northeast Regional tournament.
"We really hope to challenge for the team title," said Hawks head coach Jeff Karam about this weekend's goals. "Looking forward to our five returning champs competing for a 3A district title. Overall, I would like to see 10 or 11 guys make it to regionals."
Advancing that many wrestlers to regionals would also play into Becahi's long-term goals of competing for the team title in Hershey at the beginning of March, where they would like a shot at revenge over 3A state team champion Franklin Regional.
"It really is bittersweet how things worked out for us at team states," he said. "I was very impressed with the way we battled back after losing a heartbreaker to Franklin Regional in the semis. I think it showed us how important every point really is against a good opponent. I feel the guys are extremely motivated to do well during the individual portion of the season and not letting any doubt on the mat."
Luke Karam (126), Joey Gould (132), Mike Labriola (152), Adam Soldridge (160) and Andrew Dunn (HWT) return as defending district champions from a year ago and enter their respective classes in the discussion to repeat the endeavor.
How the rest of Karam's lineup performs will ultimately be the deciding factor for how much hardware Becahi can snag at the end of the year, but he knows that it all starts this weekend.
"Hopefully, we have a successful weekend where we can get as many guys qualified for regionals as possible," Karam said. "Obviously, we'd like to see some champs, but the key is to keep advancing to the next round (regionals). To compete for the individual state team title you need a bunch of guys to qualify. If we want any shot at Franklin Regional, we need to get a bunch of guys out to Hershey."
