'Canes Fenstermacher leads charge to districts

It's that time of year again where wrestlers begin their dreams toward Hershey when it all kicks off this Friday and Saturday at Liberty. The Hurricanes hope to crown another champion this time around and move at least half of their lineup onto next weekend's Northeast Regional tournament.

Sophomore 113-pounder KJ Fenstermacher is the lone titlist returning for Liberty, as he won the 113-pound championship last year.

Jake Gunning, who graduated last season, was Liberty's only other champ from a year ago, as a young 'Canes squad will look to make some noise on their home turf this weekend.

"As a team, we would like to finish in the top five," said Liberty head coach Jody Karam. "That's always our goal. We're hoping that some of our inexperienced wrestlers can come into their own during this tournament. We have a few guys dropping down a weight, so we're excited to see what they can do at lower weights. Six wrestlers to regionals seems realistic, but seven or eight would be a good weekend."

Senior John Ritter (138) enters this weekend with 99 wins and looks to get his 100th victory when wrestling gets under way Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. for the pigtail round. Quarterfinals start at 6 p.m. that evening, where Ritter and Fenstermacher highlight two of Liberty's strongest chances of moving forward. Luke Werner (106), Anthony Emig (152), Andrew Gunning (220) and Kyle Gildner (HWT) are also favored to advance to regionals.

Outside of Fenstermacher taking first last year following a 9-1 win over Pottsville's Luke Gardner, Werner took fourth at 106, Ritter finished in sixth at 126 rounded out by Gunning's fourth place finish at heavyweight.
