Plans for Tesla site at LV mall fall short

Plans for Tesla Motors Inc. to open up the region's first supercharing station near the Lehigh Valley Mall may have run out of juice.

Whitehall Township Mayor Edward Edward D. Hozza Jr. confirmed Tesla is no longer pursuing plans for the proposed charging station.

The station would have served Telsa's Model S sedan, a luxury vehicle with a starting price tag of $63,570.

While Tesla is no longer pursuing the site, Hozza said the company remains interested in opening up a supercharging station in the area, and has not ruled out Whitehall Township as a possible site.

Hozza said JC Penney took issue since the electrical lines would need to go over the department store's location.

Charging the Tesla vehicle would take 20 minutes and 120 volts.

The electric charge would allow the vehicle to travel 265 miles, the company's website states.

That is comparable to Lehigh Valley to New York City round trip, with a side trip added to Philadelphia before needing a charge.

Tesla vehicle owners can boost a charge from their residence, or just about anywhere where there is an electrical socket.

The paperwork and approval for the Tesla supercharging station met Whitehall Township regulations.

Hozza said he is hopeful Tesla will locate in the Lehigh Valley, possibly in Whitehall.

Tesla is based in California.
