Wrestlers qualify for team states

It seemed like déjà vu for the Parkland wrestling team last weekend at the District 11 team dual meet at Freedom High School.

Nearly a month ago the Trojans were beaten by Bethlehem Catholic 51-3. Then, after a first round victory over Bangor on Thursday in the second round of the Distric 11 Duals, Parkland met the Hawks again. But it was the same result, a lopsided loss by the Trojans, 58-3.

However, Parkland did not let that bitter taste in their mouths for long, as they regrouped to win three straight matches against Freedom, Nazareth and Easton to take second place and earn a PIAA state tournament berth.

"Our goal this season as a team was to qualify for the state team tournament in Hershey," said head coach Ryan Nunamaker. "We knew going into the event that we were fighting for second place with Bethlehem Catholic in the tournament. After our semifinal loss to Becahi, we had to refocus on the next opponent. We rebounded with three very hard-fought victories. This was definitely the toughest draw to advance to the state tournament this season. I was very proud of their performance throughout the day."

Parkland earned the No. 4 seed in districts to earn a first-round bye. They beat Bangor 61-9 in the second round to advance to Saturday's winners bracket semifinal match against Bethlehem Catholic.

After falling to the Hawks and dropping into the consolation bracket, Parkland took down unbeaten and the No. 2 seed Patriots 32-25. They then held on to beat Nazareth 30-22 to set up another classic against rival Easton in a battle for second place.

It was another close match, just like the 27-25 thriller during the regular season, as the Trojans won that won 30-25 to advance to the big dance.

A lot of different wrestlers had big Saturdays to help Parkland along the way. Frank Guida won all four matches he wrestled on Saturday. Nick Dolak and Omar Haddad also went unbeaten winning all three of their matches as well.

"Frank Guida had an outstanding day," said Nunamaker. "Frank sealed the deal against Easton with a fall in the second period. We had many outstanding performances throughout the day. It was really a team effort as many of the guys that lost competed really tough to help secure our spot in the state tournament."
