Resident wants to coach girls basketball team
Paul Makovsky of Catasauqua has an intense passion and love for basketball which he wants to share with Catasauqua Area School District players.
Makovsky, a teacher by trade, appeared before the Catasauqua Area School Board Jan. 28, inquiring about the possibility of coaching a basketball team in the district.
According to Makovsky, teams he has coached have registered more than 500 career wins. He said he has never had a losing season and he has been inducted into the Lehigh Valley Hall of Fame.
He has coached basketball teams in the Philadelphia area and the Lehigh Valley and has served as a coach for Catasauqua Youth Athletic Association teams.
"Basketball is my life, and life is short," he told the board.
He said he was upset he was not selected for the Catasauqua High School head girls basketball coach position last season.
"I was really disappointed," he said. "I don't know how you can have three years of losing seasons and survive. Do they [coaches] have the records I have?"
Board President Penny Hahn told Makovsky it is not within the board's purview to initiate the hiring of coaches and volunteers. She said Athletic Director David Troxell recommends applicants which the board then votes on.
She also said volunteer applicants are recommended by the head coach.
"The recommendation always comes from the head coach," she said.
District Superintendent Robert Spengler told Makovsky his application was not considered for the position because it had not been submitted by the deadline date.
Makovsky said he had never seen the position advertised and expressed interest in a position if one opened up in the future.
Spengler suggested he reach out to the CHS head girls basketball coach Ed Seidick to determine if he is needed in some capacity.
"It's really up to him to see where you would fit in," Spengler said.
Makovsky stressed his desire and commitment to coach and mold future district basketball players.
"I consider myself a Catasauquan," he said. "I love your schools. Your kids are great. I just wanted the board to see my background."
