PHS swimmers starting to peak at the right time
You could certainly say that Tuesday was a good day in the pool for Adam Sicinski. The Parkland senior competed in four events - two individual and two relay - and finished first in all four as both the Parkland boys and girls picked up wins over Freedom.
Sicinski helped the boys team to a 112-74 win over the Patriots (8-2 conference, 8-3 overall) as the Parkland boys upped their record to (9-1, 10-1) on the year. Sicinski took first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and was a member of relay teams that captured the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Sicinski along with Matt Ceh and Brian Reifinger gave Parkland the top three finishers in the 50-yard freestyle event, which helped Parkland to stretch it early lead and send a message to Freedom.
"I'm definitely excited," said Sicincki. "The one-two-three in the 50 [freestyle] that I was a part of, I was proud of that and diving always does their part and is a big help. The relays scored a lot of points and we did well at that."
The boys team is performing at a higher level than many expected coming into the season, even though it lost just one senior from last year's team. Sicinski believes that the strength is coming from some of the newcomers.
"I really appreciate our freshman class," said Sicniski. "Ian Johnston in the 500 and the distance events has really performed well, which is just what we needed him to do. James Connolly in the breaststroke has been great and I'm really proud of him. The freshmen class has come up really well.
"We have written in the locker room, 'Practice like you mean it' and that has really become our motto for the year and we've been putting our time in and really focusing on that. The team attitude and the atmosphere has also been a lot better this year than it was last year, so I can see that the positivity has been a definite contributor."
The girls also picked up an impressive win, coming out well on top in the battle between the last two undefeated girls teams in the EPC. Parkland moves to 10-0, 11-0 and Freedom falls to 9-1, 10-1 on the season.
"All of the girls knew what we had to do and we all got our jobs done," said Parkland junior Kira Karopoulos, who picked up an individual win in the 100 butterfly, a second-place tie in the 100 breaststroke and a second as part of the 200 medley relay team. "We all went in and did well against Freedom, who has always been a great competitor against us, and we were really excited for this meet.
"We're all really proud of each other with how we prepared for this meet and we're really happy with the outcome. Hats off to Freedom, they did an awesome job."
Karopoulos was quick to point out that the girls team didn't come into the season resting on the laurels of a 26-meet win streak or back-to-back titles in both the conference and district. Instead, the Trojans came in looking to work hard to keep their dominant stretch alive.
"We knew this was going to be a tough season, with competition like Liberty, Emmaus, Freedom and other teams, we just had to keep a good attitude and stay positive every day," Karopoulos said. "We came to practice and gave it 100 percent and worked as a team.
"Everyone at practice has always been up and we just try to stay positive for meets like this and we come in pumped and try to get the job done."
The wins by both squads put a smile on coach Rob Robitaille's face as his team prepares to wind down the regular season, which inlcudes meets against Allen and Emmaus before preparation for districts and states goes into full gear.
"Our depth is working really hard," said Robitaille. "I'm really impressed on our girls side, with the younger girls really making a name for themselves. Our senior guys are still continuing to develop a lot. You get to the fourth year, your senior year, it's like the icing on the cake and you don't always know what to expect, but the senior boys are just as driven as they always are and are dropping lifetime bests in events left and right, so I'm happy with the way we're working.
"Practices are really hard and I don't give them much of a choice. We've been racing a lot and there's a lot of physical soreness.
"Middle and early part of the year is the time for that constant burn and this is the time of the year for that constant sore, because you're really racing hard and breaking down a lot of muscle; they're having trouble moving on certain days."
