Out with the old, in with the new

The Borough of North Catasauqua has finally received an offer for the fire department's old fire truck. The borough had put the truck on the market 15 months ago, as a new ladder truck was in the final stages of construction.

North Catasauqua Borough Council President Joe Keglovits told council members at their Jan. 13 meeting the offer came from the Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department Association in Ohio for $35,000.

This was the amount the borough had been asking for.

The sale was promoted by Fire Line Equipment, a broker who specializes in the sale of fire vehicles.

The 1993 Spartan/Darley pumper truck was jointly owned by Charotin Hose Company and the borough, so both entities are signing off on the deed.

In keeping with an agreement made between the fire company and the borough, the borough will receive the funds gained from the sale.

Following unanimous approval of the sale by the council, Solicitor William McCarthy said he would draw up the bill of sale.

At the Jan. 27 meeting, the council passed a resolution officially accepting the offer.

The new truck, which has an aerial ladder, has been in service since June 2014.

Also at the Jan. 13 council meeting, North Catasauqua Fire Chief Shawn McGinley reported the roster of volunteers in the fire department is growing. He said the company is looking at the possibility of offering a scholarship program to assist junior members with the cost of training.

Community outreach continues to be an emphasis with the fire company.

He said the fire department had assisted in 25 working fires during 2014. Fortunately, he said, none of them was in North Catasauqua.
