Northampton Borough property owners have less than two weeks to pay the 2015 garbage collections bill in order to get a discount.
Refuse bills must be paid at face value starting Feb. 18. The cost is $275 for seniors and $305 for other residents. Property owners get a $25 discount if the bill is paid by Feb. 17.
Assistant to the manager LeRoy Brobst said the borough mailed the bills out at the end of December.
The borough anticipates most residents will pay their bills in person as the deadline approaches.
Brobst said extra tables and personnel will be in the lobby of the municipal building to accommodate payments and that there's been an increase in people paying the bills early compared to 2014.
He said it will "get ugly" if the bills remain unpaid after the 60-day time frame.
According to Brobst a 10-percent penalty will be imposed. Accounts will be forwarded to the district magistrate's office for payment if bills remain delinquent and liens will be placed on the property while the amount owed continues to increase.
The amount could top $1,000 or more depending on how long the bill remains delinquent.
The borough budget anticipates $946,924 in refuse collection and disposal and more than $1 million in such refuse collection fees.
