Hurricanes sweep PMW

Liberty High School's girls swim team defeated Pocono Mountain West, 127-35, and Liberty's boys swimmers also defeated Pocono Mountain West, 104-63, last Thursday.

Sabrina Krotzer, Julia McCarthy, Kayla Drago, and Anita Kundu won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.50 for the Hurricanes, and Chase Ledger, Nolan Vanatta, David Brown, and Robert Negron won the same event with a time of 1:46.79, also for the Hurricanes.

Later in the meet, Kundu, Emily Buell, Chloe Kobus, and Theresa Cazarrubias won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:53.49, and Negron, John Buttillo, Devon Alvarez, and Omar Mohamed won the same event with a time of 1:38.11.

Individual event winners for Liberty were Maggie Walters (2:10.33) and Brandon Hlavaty (2:00.95) in the 200 free, Erin Wetmore (1:04.41) in the 100 fly, and Krotzer (5:55.50) and Mohamed (5:35.41) in the 500 free.

Krotzer also won the 200 IM (2:30.05), and teammate, Jessica Becker, was a close second (2:30.13).

Buell placed first in the 50 free (26.86) and Evan Smith also took first place in the same event (22.41).

Buell said, "I've been training really hard because I want to get my 50 time down. I had been thinking about it all week and getting excited for it. That was my personal record for the season. I was really happy, but when I saw Kendra's [Smith] time, I screamed because she was working really hard."

Kendra Smith placed second with a time of 27.07, a district qualifying time.

Buell went on to win the 100 free (1:00.02)

"That was one of my main events last year, but this was the first time my coach put me in it this year. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a good starting point," said Buell.

Julia McCarthy (1:02.90) and Brice Kessler (1:01.50) won the 100 backstroke, and Kundu (1:14.62) and Hlavaty (1:08.70) won the 100 breaststroke.

The Hurricanes had ten 1-2-3 finishes in their meet against Pocono Mountain West, eight for the girls and two for the boys.

This week, Liberty will take on Easton.

Buell said, "[Their girls] beat us last year, so we're really excited to swim against them again."
