Freedom splits with Solehi

Freedom High School's swimmers split in their meet against Southern Lehigh last week when the Patriot girls defeated the Spartans, 102-84, and the Spartan boys defeated the Patriots, 97-88.

Patriot senior, Sam Magnan, said, "We knew it was going to be close going into it. A couple of races, we definitely could have placed a little higher."

Freedom's boys took first place in five out of 12 events.

Magnan won the 200 free with a time of 1:42.68 and broke Freedom's pool record, previously set in 2010 with a time of 1:42.99.

"I've had my eye on that for awhile, and I went for it the meet before and missed it by a tenth of a second, so I'm pretty relieved. I knew I could go that fast, it was just a matter of when I could, but my best time is a second or two better than the record," said Magnan.

John McGinty won the diving event for the Patriot boys with a score of 213.60.

Shjon Watlington placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.32, and Magnan won the 100 free with a time of 48.72.

Watlington, Brian Seitz, Tyler Higgins, and Magnan won the last event of the day, the 400 free, with a time of 3:35.77.

Arguably the most heartbreaking event of the day for the Patriot boys was the 100 breaststroke. Southern Lehigh's Andrew Johnson outtouched Freedom's Trevor Watlington, 1:07.45-1:07.47.

Magnan said, "Even if our A and B relays went 1-2, I don't think it would have been enough to win."

Individual event winners for the Patriot girls were Shannon Howell in the 200 free in 2:02.61 and the 500 free in 5:21.05, Carly DelFranco in the 200 IM in 2:21.54 and the 100 butterfly in 1:04.36, and Helen Hsu in the 50 free in 24.56 and the 100 backstroke in 1:04.44.

Madison Young took first place in the diving event with a score of 245.70.

The Patriot girls won the first and last relays of the day. DelFranco, Hsu, Kelly Kopko, and Howell combined to take first place in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.51, and Howell, Kopko, Rileigh Ellis, and Hsu teamed up to win the 400 free relay in 3:56.09.

Freedom also won meets against East Stroudsburg North and East Stroudsburg South last week.

The Patriot girls defeated East Stroudsburg North, 74-20, and East Stroudsburg South, 75-19. The Patriot boys defeated East Stroudsburg North, 67-27, and East Stroudsburg South, 78-16.

DelFranco broke the pool record in the 500 free with a time of 5:34.33, and Magnan broke the pool record in the 100 fly with a time of 55.06 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.10.

"It feels good. I swam there [at East Stroudsburg North] almost ten years ago for the Y," Magnan said.

This week, Freedom will take on Parkland.

"They're still a good team, and they're pretty deep in men's," said Magnan. "It will be a good meet for kids to get district cuts."
