To the Editor:
After reading the Editor's View by Deb Palmieri published in the Northwestern Press on Jan. 22, we wanted to say we agree with her viewpoint.
What purpose was served by running the derogatory cartoon in Charlie Hebdo?
As she stated, "A truthful and unbiased news story would have had more legitimacy ..."
It seems to us that, these days, the news media enjoys stirring up controversy – the more inflammatory, the better.
And this kind of behavior is not just occurring in the media.
Just because we have the right and the freedom to say whatever we want doesn't necessarily mean we should do so.
For example, should we say whatever we want to friends, relatives, co-workers, etc., if it serves no other purpose than to demean or mock them?
What kind of relationships with others do we want to have? And, people wonder why bullying takes place not only in schools, but the workplace as well.
We adults are certainly not setting a good example for the next generation. It's a sad commentary on our society in general.
Whatever happened to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?"
Unfortunately, less and less people seem to live by this adage. And what purpose did it serve to run the second derogatory cartoon?
People, can we please think before we act? Will we choose to spread love or hate?
Please, can we grow up and act accordingly, if not for our own sake, at least for our childrens.
