Boys get eliminated

Catasauqua head boys basketball coach Eric Snyder never believed his club would be in its current position this season.

With the Roughies' loss to Palmerton last week, they were officially eliminated from the post season. It was a tough task as Catty had to win its final six games of the regular season to earn a ticket to the district playoffs.

Despite a new makeup to his club, Snyder expected his club to reach another level.

"After we lost a number of players from last year, we knew this would be a different year in some ways," said the veteran coach. "But I really never expected us to miss districts. I really thought we would qualify.

"But as the season went on, I could see it slipping away. It was a season in which we just committed too many unforced turnovers. We also had trouble finishing games all season. We were in so many games this season.

"We played hard, but we just couldn't get it done. It has been frustrating since we have been right there."

With his club beginning this week with an overall 3-15 record, Snyder also has kept a eye on his JV team, which has not lost a game since Dec. 20.

"They can say that they are undefeated in the new year," stated Snyder. "There are five freshmen starting and nine freshmen on that team. It is a nice group of kids and there are also some good eighth graders coming soon as well.

"They have really made a lot of strides and have put it all together down there."

Snyder noted his current team will graduate four starters and have center Kevin Bond as the lone returnee next winter. Bond has been battling a sickness and senior Jake Kober also has been out of the lineup with a bout of mononucleosis.

"Bond has a great presence in our lineup," said Snyder. "He can block shots and help alter shots. Kober is a kids that just goes out and works. He (Kober) is another guy who is missed."

Snyder will look to Miguel Hernandez, Nate Pontician, Cory Hicks, and Isaiah Graves among others to further develop their games in anticipation for the 2015-16 season.

But he knows this season isn't over.

"We want our seniors to go out and play," Snyder said. "They are playing for pride. They wasn't to finish the year strong.

"We can learn from this year and move on. It seemed like the Nazareth game (an opening game 68-61 loss) sort of set the tone for us. We had trouble getting over the hump all season."
