Wrestlers hold on against Emmaus

A pin is the highest scoring win that a wrestler can achieve from a match as it earns his team bonus points. Those points add up and usually determine which team wins the match.

Two straight pins from Dan Oberle (182 pounds) and Tom Alcaro (195) put Emmaus in front of Parkland for the first time all night with two bouts remaining last Wednesday at Parkland High School.

But it was a pin in the next match by the Trojans' leader, Omar Haddad, at 220 pounds, which gave Parkland the lead back. The Trojans held on with a decision from Jahan Worth in the final bout to defeat the Green Hornets 31-25 last Wednesday night at Parkland High School.

The Trojans bounced back in a big way even before the win against their rival. The team beat Stroudsburg the next day and then went 5-0 in the Parkland duals.

"The Becahi matched showed us what we need to improve on," said Jacob Lizak. "We've been practicing that stuff that we needed to work on and using it in our next matches. These wins have given us some confidence and hopefully that will help us moving forward."

Parkland started off the match with two dominating wins at 106 and 113. Nick Dolak (tech fall) and Zach Ortman (major decision) helped the Trojans jump out to an early 9-0 lead, but Tyler Corpora answered with a close 3-2 decision at 120.

"It's always good to start off fast just in case you don't get as many bonus points as you need later on," said Lizak. "We had a lot of guys step up tonight, and that was big."

Then the two teams traded wins for the next seven bouts. Lizak (126), Lee Todora (138) and Rob Wetherhold (152) each won by decisions, while Frank Guida (170) won by a major decision as Parkland led 22-13 with four bouts remaining.

With Emmaus down by nine, and time dwindling, the sophomore Oberle and senior Alcaro stepped up and scored big wins to give their team the lead and some momentum.

But Parkland did the same thing, turning to its leader in the senior Haddad. His pin, followed by Worth's decision gave the Trojans the EPC victory.

Lizak also recorded his 100th career win in the victory over Emmaus.
