LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Winter weather works its wrath on area roads

Winter may have spared Whitehall Township from having its public works personnel plow snow from the miles of streets in the township, but it has not spared its wrath on the continuing number of potholes which pop up on streets.

In December, John Rackus, director of public works, informed the township board of commissioners and the administration that one-third of the month, 10 days, had personnel patching potholes, and there is no let-up in January.

Other winter related work included sod clean-up from plow damaged areas, refilling salt barrels as needed, clearing branches at the Water Street culvert, building maintenance, hauling scrap metal from township dumpsters, cleaned inlet grates, painted pickup truck plows and a myriad of other chores. The pump on the cardboard compactor at the recycling center was repaired to verify it can handle all single stream materials.

In other news, roadway sampling was completed for a mix designed for Spruce Street. Bid preparation is underway for a new salt storage building.

Rackus reported information is being gathered on electric service to the gate at the Cameron tract with the intent to install a power gate and camera system.

She said fire truck repairs were completed, and a new deck was installed on the township's heavy equipment trailer.

The sign department cut and installed various new signs and decals. Nine signs were replaces, 11 were repaired anda number of posts were repaired or replaces.
