Whitehall announces 2015 Hall of Fame class

The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee in the Whitehall-Coplay School District is proud to announce its Athletic Hall of Fame for the Class of 2015.

Two individuals and two teams will be honored at the induction ceremony, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 23, at Whitehall High School. The ceremony will be before the varsity boys basketball game between Central Catholic and Whitehall, at approximately 6:45 p.m. The varsity game versus Central Catholic will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Hall of Fame Class of 2015 includes: Mark Bonshak, Robert Kline, the 1980 baseball team and the 1981 girls 3200 meter relay team.

Mark Bonshak, Class of 1982, was an outstanding two-sport athlete for the Zephyrs, excelling in football and baseball. Bonshak was a member of three championship teams at Whitehall. He was an all-EPC punter and running back as well as an all-EPC catcher. He was honorable mention all-state running back, a three-year starter in football and baseball and a member of the 1980 baseball team being inducted in this same class. He was a four-year starting catcher at Bloomsburg University.

Robert Kline, Class of 1969, has had a distinguished career in football while also being a member of a championship baseball team. Upon graduation from Whitehall, Kline was both the single season rushing yards leader and the career rushing leader. He is still in the top-eight in both of those categories. Kline was a first team Lehigh Valley League running back and linebacker as well as honorable mention all-state in 1968. At Lock Haven, he was First Team All-PSAC running back in 1973.

The 1980 baseball team finished 3rd in the PIAA Tournament after winning a District 11 championship under hall of fame coach Joe Steiner. The team finished the season with a 22-6 record. The team had a staff ERA of 2.23. Steve Weidner led the team in batting average, while Tim Harakal, Weidner, and Jim Emerick led on the mound. The coaching staff included John Churetta, John DeLucia, and Bill Kunkle.

The 1981 girls 3200 relay team established a school record that still stands today. The time of 9:50.3 has withstood the test of time at Whitehall High School. The four members of the relay team included Elaine (Walgren) Hamill, Catherine "Picci" (Gober) Bonshak, Lisa (Saganowich) Lynn, and Karen (Schmidt) Solderitch.
