Saucon Valley's winter sports have exceeded expectations so far. Girls basketball, coached by Jerry Calabrese, has sprung off to a 9-2 record on a clear path to district and league playoffs. Of the starting five, four seniors, Abby Omdahl, Bridget O'Donnell, Elyssa Okken and Grace Spirk, lead the team. Sophomore Ally Small also adds to the starting lineup. Starting off the season the lady panthers pulled off an upset against the defending league champions, Northwestern.
After being out the previous season due to an ACL injury, Abby Omdahl returns to the court averaging the team high of 13.9 ppg. "This season so far has consisted of beating the odds and proving to everyone that we are a high caliber team and ready to make an impact in the league. We are led by four seniors who have played together since youth leagues and are ready to compete at a championship level," Omdahl says about the team and season. Omdahl committed to Loyola University of Maryland and will join the Greyhounds women's basketball team next fall.Next to girls basketball, boys basketball is also having an extraordinary start to their season. Based on pre-season rankings, the girls are currently ranked eighth and the boys are ranked sixth in the district. The boys are led by Seniors Matt Smith, Connor Simpson, Jake Snead and Chris Magan, and junior Mike Kane.
Leading the Panthers in points for the season, Kane averages 18.2 ppg, with Simpson averaging 14.2 ppg, and Smith averaging 13.1 ppg. "We are pleased with the way we are playing now. However, we hope to get better as the season progresses and head into playoffs playing our best basketball," says Simpson. Both boys and girls basketball teams look forward to playing Colonial League rival, Southern Lehigh on Jan. 30th.
