Parkland shows depth in win over Nazareth
For a better part of the season, the Parkland boys basketball team has had several different players score in double figures in each game. No one has been quite as consistent at that as junior guard Devante Cross.
Cross has led the team in scoring for more than half of its games. But last Friday night, the Trojans showed just how good they really are, with Cross being the distributor in a 65-36 win against Nazareth at Parkland High School.
Cross did not tally a point, but still dished out four assists. Sam Iorio led the team with 19 points, and Kyle Stout (17) and Jack Dreisbach (14) fueled the Trojan offense.
"They were playing a zone and we just tried to work the ball around," said Dreisbach. "If someone had the open look they would take it. I just wanted to have confidence in my shot that they would fall tonight."
It took a little bit of time for thre Trojans to get going, as they shot just 5-for-12 from the field in the first quarter for 12 points. The defense only allowed three Blue Eagles points in the first period as Nazareth was 0-for-3 from the field and turned the ball over six times.
In the second quarter Dreisbach, Stout, and Iorio got going. Dreisbach hit two three-pointers and scored eight of his 14 in that frame and Parkland doubled up Nazareth to take a 32-16 halftime lead.
"We know that on any given night one of us could be hot and lead the team in points," said Dreisbach. "We just have to keep working the ball around to each other and someone will be in rhythm."
The Blue Eagles could never find a rhythm of their own offensively. The Trojans forced 16 turnovers and Nazareth only had only player score in double figures with 11.
"Defense is a big part of our game," added Dreisbach. "If we play good defense and force turnovers, that will lead to some easy baskets on our end."
Parkland knocked off Whitehall at home on Tuesday night, and will now play three games in six days starting with a home game against surging Northampton Friday night, followed by a matchup against defending PIAA Class AAA runner-up Susquehanna Township on Sunday in the Hoop Group Showcase. Parkland follows that with Tuesday night match up against Central Catholic.
Through the win over Whitehall, the Trojans were 13-1 overall and 11-0 in the EPC with just a few weeks left in the season.
