Improvement continues
As he and his squad move through their first year together, Kyle Rusnock and his Catasauqua grapplers continue to mature individually and as a unit.
Heading into this week, the Roughies had an overall 3-7 mark, but they had a respectable 3-3 mark in the Colonial League. They recently had an impressive 54-21 victory over Salisbury.
"We're doing alright," said Rusnock. "We are holding our own and we had a nice win over Salisbury. We were competitive against Palisades and Southern Lehigh. But we have a nice spot in the league and it's good now."
Rusnock recently has been impressed with Anthony Stahl and Jacob Latsch, who both gained their first varsity wins at 106 and 195 respectively. Both wrestlers recorded falls in the victories. With Stahl - who had been struggling to make weight - and Latsch, the Roughies can fill a full lineup.
"It is always great when you get your first win," noted Rusnock. "That was big for both Stahl and Latsch. They have come into their own out there. It's a great confidence booster for the both of them."
Rusnock also cited the performances of Devin Greene (145) and Ben Nosal (182), who recently have both returned to the lineup.
Greene had been sidelined from a concussion and Nosal with a broken collarbone, both injuries from the football season. Satchel Stauffer has moved to 285 and Kyle Zimpfer will slide to 220.
"Devin (Greene) has a really good match against Salisbury," said Rusnock. "It is good to finally have been Ben (Nosal) back. He (Nosal) also is wrestling well, and he is a real inspiration to everyone. Satchel (Stauffer) and Kyle (Zimpfer) have been going up against kids who are bigger than them and they have been really doing well."
The Roughies will open the week against perennial league power Saucon Valley and then they will travel to Panther Valley High School for the annual Coal Cracker Classic. Catty ends the season with matches against Pius X and Wilson.
Rusnock sees his club showing further growth down the stretch.
"Saucon (Valley) will be a real obstacle for us," added Rusnock. "We will be tested at the Coal Cracker Classic. But we have two winnable matches against Pius X and Wilson. We want to end the year with some more wins.
"We're at a good point now, and our guys are getting ready for districts."
